The Pilates method was created by Joseph Pilates who was a prisoner of war on the Isle of Man, he practised martial arts, yoga and boxing and during the second world war he started to rehabilitate injured soldiers using the springs from the beds. After the war he emigrated to New York and set up his first studio. After his death the method was continued and developed as a mind body practise and proved to be a go to for injury rehabilitation. Although the method is popular with women it was devised by a man so the original repertoire is very suited to the male body. Pilates can be used as a mindfulness practise for breath regulation and concentration and as physical maintenance that supports other daily function, sport and athletic training.
